California!

Congratulations are in order today for the State of California… State-wide bag ban signed into law today! When you stop to think about the implications, this is quite a moment in the battle zone that is single-use plastics.

If California were a country, it would be the world’s 7th largest economy, ahead of Brazil and just a smidgen back of Italy. Think about that. One out of every nine Americans lives in California; what happens there has a way of filtering out to the rest of the Union eventually.

It is low hanging fruit and it doesn’t represent the largest share of the marine plastics issue but it matters. It is not the end of the discussion about our society’s use of plastics but it is an excellent place to start. Every step taken toward a less consumption-driven, more mindful society is a good step forward.
