A couple weeks ago, Steve and I headed over to the Slater Museum at the University of Puget Sound to learn how to do necropsies on sea birds. Dr. Gary Shugart walked us through the process, how to determine the condition of the birds at time of death and how to cut into them and examine the stomach contents and accurately assess whether plastic ingestion was a problem with each specific bird.

He did a few and then we got our chance. Steve put together a video of the process that shows some of what we did. Enjoy! (It’s not too graphic, but you may want to show it somewhere away from the dinner table.)
